NAME: Wylan Van Eck
CANON: Grishaverse
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE: Official fanart comissioned by the creator
CANON POINT: The end of Crooked Kingdom
BACKGROUND: Link to Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom pages and Wylan’s character page.
PERSONALITY:
In theory, Wylan Van Eck, son of a well-known, wealthy, and (previously) respected merchant, should not be a valued member of the Dregs, one of the toughest gang in the Barrel. And at first, he wasn’t. He began his life of crime as hardly more than leverage, a hostage with a few marketable skills, but his most valuable asset was his name. Even after his adventures with the Dregs, Wylan is far from a hardened criminal, but he starts to come into his own, growing up, finding himself, and overcoming his fears and limitations.
It’s no secret that the rest of the Dregs consider Wylan too innocent for a life of crime. They remark on how young he seems, despite him being only a year or two younger than them and tease him about his life before the Barrel and the “skills” he picked up, because what use is a flautist in a gang? He clearly lacks the experience the others have arguably too much of. The first time Wylan’s shot at, he ends up cowering on the floor-- not exactly the most auspicious start to his time with the gang. He’s come a long way since then, becoming an integral part of their plans and able to hold his own in missions, but he still lacks the street smarts that comes naturally to the others. He often asks himself why he’s there and finds himself channeling the strengths of his friends- bravado, courage, focus, will, and reckless hope- to guide him through the tougher moments. He’s naive and unsure, a product of his sheltered and privileged upbringing. He lacks confidence, both in executing missions and his own abilities. Wylan also doesn’t enjoy violence or feeling like a criminal, a fact he tells the others many times, the more criminal aspects of their dealings warring with his own sense of morality. But even despite these difficulties, Wylan would not trade his life with the Dregs to go back to the life he was living before.
Being the unlikely demo expert of the Dregs is far better than being the disowned son of a mercher. You see, Wylan has a secret. Despite his father’s efforts, years of intense tutoring and constant berating, Wylan has never been able to learn how to read or write. His father see this as a major failing and believes Wylan to be stupid, useless, and a disgrace to their family, and over time, Wylan began to believe his father’s words. He doubts his intelligence and sees himself as the family disappointment. His father went so far as sending Wylan off on a doomed journey to music school that was meant to end in his death. Wylan narrowly escaped, and from that escape began his life in the Barrel away from his father. Even then, Wylan kept his secret carefully guarded, only revealing it to the Dregs when absolutely necessary. He doesn’t realize just how evil his father is, still convinced that some of what his father says is right, until he discovers that his mother had not died when he was a child, that instead his father had her committed so that he could remarry and get a new heir, an heir who could read and take over the Van Eck empire. With the discovery of his mother, Wylan is faced with the harsh reality of just how cruel his father is and is more determined than ever to help the Dregs ruin him, and bring his mother back home.
Wylan’s father may consider him useless and a failure, but he’s far from it. Wylan’s a skilled chemist and musician with a knack for equations, numbers, art, and music. He is curious and inventive, with a drive to figure things out, whether they be a new explosive or the inner workings of a building. This curiosity drives him and makes him a valuable demolitions expert for the Dregs. He may not be the best under pressure, but Wylan’s ingenuity and quick thinking have saved the gang on missions more than once. He has a tendency to surprise people when it really counts, something Wylan enjoys. He may underestimate himself at times, but that doesn’t mean he likes to be underestimated and he consistently proves that one shouldn’t. There’s a quiet courage to him and he’s proved his worth to the gang time and time again.
Beyond his demolition skills, Wylan brings another strength to the team: his loyalty and friendship. The members of the Dregs are Wylan’s first true friends and he admires, appreciates, and cares for them all deeply. Wylan can be reserved, awkward, and often has trouble finding the right words, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t value his friends. He has a kindness and earnesty that isn’t found readily in the Barrel. He’s very different from most of them, more innocent and quieter and much more easily flustered, than his friends, but he doesn’t let these differences stop him from forming close bonds with them. And as much as they might tease him, Wylan knows that his friends value him, a fact for which he is extremely grateful after his father’s constant rejection.
By the end of Crooked Kingdom, Wylan is much more than the runaway mercher’s son forced into a life of crime. He’s inherited his father’s empire, gained new friends, found his mother, and has found a new sureness in himself. This sureness has only increased during his time as a member of ALASTAIR, as he has new accomplishments outside of the Dregs (Kaz and Jesper both transferred after Wylan’s first mission), proving his worth outside of the gang. He’s made new friends and been able to contribute to missions despite his own insecurities. Wylan still holds his secret close, but he’s starting to trust more people with it, and reevaluate how much of a failing it is. Magitek has given him an independence and a tool he never thought he’d have, an independence that he doesn’t want to lose when he returns home. He still has his doubts, the fear of destroying everything his father worked for is very strong, but he’s now armed with the tools and support to overcome them. Wylan keeps surprising people, and that’s his plan for the future, because no one expects a mercher with ties to the Barrel’s most notorious gang or a flautist who knows dozens of way to blow something up and has been part of a team that protects the multiverse.
ABILITIES:
Demolitions Expert: His demolition skills may be described as “passable”, but they are really far better than that. His chemistry skills paired with his curiosity and ingenuity allows him to create all sorts of unique explosives and bombs for the Dregs. From colorful bombs to a specialized weevil (nicknamed the “Wyvil” much to his chagrin), Wylan shows time and time again that his demolition skills are excellent and a real asset to the team.
Music: Wylan is also an excellent musician and flautist, a fact his friends won’t let him forget. He’s skilled at playing the flute and can also play the piano. He uses music to help him compensate for not being able to read. He’s able to remember words that others have read to him if he puts them to song.
Science/Math: Wylan has a knack for math and science and it’s a skill he honed in hopes of compensating for his inability to read or write. He’s good with number and equations, even saying that he much prefers them to words.
Art: Wylan is also a good artist, a skill he and his mother share. Along with more formal art instruction as a child, Wylan put his art skills to good use with the Dregs. Drawing maps and detailed diagrams of buildings and other parts of their missions, Wylan’s sketches proved to be invaluable tools.
INVENTORY:
Wylan will arrive with his satchel, which will contain various flash bombs, fireworks, and explosives, maps and designs for projects he was working on back home, some money (kruge), and his flute.
He will also have some items he picked up during his time as a member of ALASTAIR: ALASTAIR uniform, green and blue skateboard (from Peter), temporary blessing (invisbility) (from Graham), warm winter hat complete with ear flaps (from Fiona), Jack-O-Lantern full of candy (from Keith), a very dense calculus textbook from Terra Felis (from Oliver), a small (palm-sized) landscape painting that his mom painted (“Courtesy the Green Witch”), stat-boosting ring (one time use, stored in a “pulleen” bag (Jin), two suits (Lermazen mission and from Giovanni), lingerie (from Loki), tapestry showing Ketterdam and key moments from each mission he’s been on (Anniversary Gift)
HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY:
Wylan’s initial adventures with the Dregs prove that he’s nothing if not adaptable. He had his moments of doubts and failure when he first joined, but he rather quickly became a valued member of the gang. His time as a member of ALASTAIR went similarly. Initially he was overwhelmed and stuck to Kaz and Jesper’s, other members of the Dregs who were part of ALASTAIR when he arrived, plans, looking to them for direction. With their transfer, Wylan was forced to become more independent, and find his own way through missions. He wants to continue to do this as he joins Hathaway, and he’s confident he will be able to adapt to joining yet another team. As a demolitions expert, he’s used to working in the field and working on a team, and the guild based structure of Hathaway will remind him of the gangs of the Barrel enough to be familiar. Wylan had his doubts about joining Hathaway when offered the chance to return home, but ultimately he knew he had to stay not just to help continue their mission of protecting the multiverse, but to prove his own worth away from the Dregs. Wylan is also driven to stay by the technological advances, specifically Magitek and it’s text to voice capabilities, that make his life easier and allow him an independence he never thought he’d have. He couldn’t pass up the opportunity to utilize the technology more and to bring the technology back to his home so that neither he nor (hopefully) anyone else will be limited by their inability to read again.
INCENTIVE:
For his incentive, Wylan asks Hathaway for a version of the text-to-speech technology like what Magitek allows that he'd be able to use/bring back to his home, including being able to replicate and distribute the technology to others. He’s aware that the technology would have to be adapted to suit his home, since advanced technology is limited and he imagines that it would have to be powered by Grisha-based magic, but as long as the technology can work as a text to voice and dictation tool, he would be happy with any adjustments that needed to be made.
SPECIALIZATION:
Inventor: Considering Wylan’s role of demolitions expert in his gang back home, Wylan seems most obviously to be an inventor. He has a knack for chemistry and numbers, with the ability to conceive of and create unique explosive after unique explosive. Despite his inability to read or write, he’s also well educated and intelligent, with a love for knowledge and desire to learn more. He’s even said that he never thinks he’ll learn enough about everything, but it’s clear he’s up for trying. He’s also creative, not just when it comes to explosives, but he’s a gifted artist and musician, two forms of expression he cares about and cultivates. Whether he’s creating a new (likely highly dangerous) chemical compound to suit his team’s need, drawing detailed maps that necessary to complete missions, or writing music for his own enjoyment, there’s no doubt that Wylan has creative ability valued in inventors. It’s also the specialization that he’d adapt easiest to, familiar enough to his role in the Dregs that he wouldn’t doubt his ability to succeed at it.
Sentinel: Wylan would also easily be able to adapt to the role of sentinel, given his loyalty and caring nature. As someone who grew up under the constant supervision of a father who didn’t care about him, Wylan wants to care about people and to find people who will care about them and he’s aware of how valuable emotional and physical support are. He’s an incredibly loyal friend and willing to do nearly anything for his friends, even at the risk of his own safety. His sheltered and privileged upbringing makes him at times naive and unrelatable, but he still does his best to understand and help those he considers his people. Wylan is by nature more of a pacifist, and is unlikely to jump straight to violence (jumping to explosions is something else entirely), so he would be more suited to take on a support role, preferring to help those going into any literal or figurative battles than fight himself. He’s earnest, at times insecure, and definitely someone you want to have by your side, even if he can be rather useless in a fight.
